About Lampwork Glass
About Lampwork Glass
Lampworking is an ancient, highly skilled heritage craft dating back to the 5th century BC and famously perfected in Murano, Italy. The name originates from historical European studios where artisans used oil lamps fed by bellows to melt glass. Today, modern torches have replaced the lamps, but the painstaking dedication to precision and detail remains unchanged.
Unlike traditional glassblowing which uses a large furnace, lampworking allows for intricate, flame-sculpted hand manipulation.
How It’s Made
• Artisanal Creation: Individual rods of premium colored glass are melted over a torch and wound around a steel mandrel to build the bead's core.
• Intricate Detailing: While molten, the glass is embellished with specialized surface techniques, ensuring every single bead is completely unique.
• Kiln-Annealed for Durability: Beads are "soaked" at regulated high temperatures in a professional kiln and cooled slowly over several hours. This critical step removes structural stress, making the glass exceptionally strong and crack resistant.
Note: Because these pieces are entirely handmade, slight variations in pattern and color depth will occur, adding to the unique character and charm of your jewelry.
Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Glass:
While my beads are annealed for durability, they are still glass. Avoid dropping or putting intense pressure on them.
Sterling Silver:
Clean with mild soap, polish with a soft cloth. Silver tarnishes when exposed to oxygen. It your silver tarnishes (turns black) you can clean it with a treated silver cloth to restore the shine.
